Frequently asked questions
I live in a rented flat. Is home insurance relevant for me?
Yes — a contents-only policy covers your furniture, electronics and valuables against fire and burglary. It typically costs a few hundred rupees a month.
How is the sum insured for the building calculated?
On reconstruction cost — built-up area × prevailing construction rate per sq ft — not the market price of the flat (which includes land you don't need to rebuild).
Are jewellery and valuables covered?
Up to standard sub-limits by default; higher amounts can be covered by declaring them specifically. Bank-locker contents need a separate cover.
Does a housing society's insurance cover my flat?
Society policies usually cover common structure only. Your interiors, contents and improvements need your own policy.
